REGION DESCRIPTION

The Kootenays is an area of Southeastern BC which borders Washington, Idaho and Montana to the south.  The region is divided into the West Kootenays and the East Kootenays.  Castlegar, Trail and Rossland are the main hubs of the west Kootenays, while, Cranbrook, Fernie and Kimberly are the main centers in the East.  The entire region is heavily reliant on mining and forestry, as their economy is mostly resource based.  Recently the economy has increased its dependence on tourism, where hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and skiing options are abundant.
